"Ringing in the brain" and how we can help

What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is most commonly referred to as “ringing in the brain”. It is heard by most people at some point in their lives, even those with normal hearing. It itself does not cause harm, but sometimes its your response to the tinnitus that can affect your life.

Should I seek help for my Tinnitus?

Most cases of tinnitus are harmless and simply a byproduct of a damaged hearing system, but you should seek help from a hearing care professional under the following circumstances:

  • You have persistent tinnitus
  • Your tinnitus is only heard in one ear
  • Your tinnitus is accompanied by dizziness and/or balance problems
  • Tinnitus is affecting your day-to-day activities

Can Tinnitus be cured?

There are certain instances where management of diet and medication can reduce or eliminate the tinnitus, but for most patients, there is no known cure. They are, however, many treatment options to provide relief. Because tinnitus is so unique from person to person, it is important to find a treatment plan that is specific to your personal needs. A network of health professionals including hearing care professionals, ENTs, and dieticians, can work together to help you find relief.

How Central PA Hearing Aid Solutions can help with Tinnitus:

We have in-depth training in treating tinnitus patients. We first meet with you to better understand the history and characteristics of your tinnitus. We may perform a hearing test to provide information regarding how the tinnitus sounds to you. From there, there are several treatment options that could be recommended including Sound Therapy, Tinnitus Retraining Therapy, and/or Progressive Tinnitus Management.

With Tinnitus Sound Therapy, a tinnitus sound generating (TSG) device, similar to a hearing aid, is used to “cover up” the perceived tinnitus with background noise, so the brain pays less attention to the tinnitus and becomes habituated to it. If you also having hearing loss that needs to be treated, there are combination devices, such as Resound hearing aids, we could provide to you that are your hearing aid and Tinnitus Sound Generator simultaneously.

Will I always need to use the TSG?

Some people find immediate relief when using a TSG or combination device, but for others it can take 6-24 months or even longer for habituation to the tinnitus to occur. Learning to cope with your tinnitus is a process and should be delicately handled and treated over a period of time.
